          Nilas Martins, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, has been hired by the Washington Opera to choreograph its production of “Aida,” and he will be the lead dancer.

          Verdi’s spectacle of tragic love and divided loyalties has been chosen to make a splash, with its three-hour grandness of scale, the high-tech concept of its director, Paolo Micciche, its moving projections, fiber-optic costumes and three ballets.

          And for those ballets, no “movement coach” would do: no, nothing less than a true ballet choreographer.

          Nilas Martins, born in Copenhagen, received his early dance training at the Royal Danish Ballet School.
